Interviewing skills workshop-improving the outcome
The purpose of this training programme is to help both candidates and interviewers enhance their knowledge and skills in order to improve their chances of being successful – from both perspectives. Apart from the topics which are an essential part of helping people prepare, the focus of this training programme is to give participants an opportunity to practice during a simulated 30 minute interview either as a panel member, observer or as a candidate. This combination of knowledge and skills, and the opportunity to practice, has proved to be a valuable experience for many previous participants.
We have been involved in helping both trainees and consultants prepare for interviews either as interviewers or candidates for over 15 years. Although The Advisory Appointment Committee (AAC) has remained the main assessment tool for consultant appointments, we have modified and improved the programme to meet the changes to the appointment process at other levels, and of course feedback from previous participants! The principles of being a ‘good’ candidate or interviewer are surprisingly generic at whatever level.
The programme is either held over a half day or a full day.
During the half day programme participants will learn how to:
- Identify what they looking for in a particular job and what an employer is likely to be looking for in a candidate – and how to make the ‘fit’.
- Look at what criteria are being used to assess candidates and how to meet these.
- Write a CV or application form (or both) and tailor the information as appropriate.
- Prepare both as a candidate and interviewer
- Enhance their confidence as a candidate.
- Put some of this learning into practice during a 30 minute interview using real job descriptions and person specifications.
During the full day programme participants will cover all of the above and:
- Have more of an opportunity to practice as a candidate.
- Learn more about the skills of an interviewer including the structure and dynamics of questioning and listening, equal opportunities issues, and have more time to prepare for questions and answers
- As a candidate have an opportunity to learn from a ‘video’ recording of their experience.
